The United Way of Miami County has announced their annual “Community of Character” Scholarship. A $500.00 scholarship will be awarded to one graduating student from Peru High School, Maconaquah High School, and North Miami High school who plans on attending a post-secondary program.

Peru – This morning at approximately 8:00 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police, the Miami County Sheriff’s Department, and the Peru Police Department responded to a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Broadway Street, in which a 12-year-old Miami County girl was killed.

Miami County, IN - Indiana State Police Sergeant Rick Brown has announced his candidacy for Miami County Sheriff. Brown will continue the tradition of service that Miami County citizens expect from their Sheriff. "Miami County is a great place to work, live, worship, and raise a family," said Brown. "The people of Miami County are important to me. I have served as a military veteran, a jail deputy, and a State Trooper. I hope to continue serving as Miami County Sheriff."
Brown enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1978 to 1982. He separated from military service to begin his law enforcement career. After serving as a Miami County jail deputy for 3 years, Brown attended the Indiana State Police Academy in 1985 and was assigned to road patrol duties in Miami County. "I've been a Miami County resident for over 35 years. This is my home, and there is no place like home," Brown added.

PERU, Dec. 6, 2017-The City of Peru is pleased to announce the launch of the River View Landing community improvement project, an economic development project to develop 40 acres of property along the Wabash River between River Walk Park and West City Park. The property was recently acquired by the City and will be developed in phases, with Phase One including a new YMCA facility, a bike and walking trail connecting the downtown River Walk to the Nickel Plate Trail, and additional parking for West City Park.
“This is a building block toward a stronger, healthier community,” said Peru Mayor Gabriel Greer. “It’s a great example of what we can accomplish working together.”

Peru, IN - On December 4, 2017, at approximately 3:37 p.m., Sergeant Samantha Raber responded to the 350 block of West Twelfth Street for a report of a theft. After arriving at the residence, the victim advised Sergeant Raber that a male by the name of Brandon Thomas had visited his residence around 2:00 a.m. Thomas remained at the residence when the victim eventually went to bed. Upon waking up, Mr. Thomas was no longer in the residence. The victim then noticed several items missing from his residence. Those items were a Taurus 9mm handgun, a Citizen watch, keys to his residence and his vehicle and a Galaxy J3 cell phone.

Peru, Indiana - The Peru Fire Department is preparing a special Christmas for a record number of Miami County children this year.
The PFD has been utilizing donations and funds from fundraisers to help make Christmas special for Miami County students for years. In recent years, gifts have been given to families at the department’s Christmas breakfast. Forty children will receive a better Christmas from the PFD’s efforts this year, which is nearly double the number of children served last year.
“When you see the need of a young child, and you know they’re not going to have anything under the tree, it just melts your heart to know you helped somebody,” said Peru Fire Department Assistant Chief Robert Daine.

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.9 percent for October and remains lower than the national rate of 4.1 percent. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the U.S. rate for four full years.
The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. Indiana’s labor force had a net decrease of 11,694 over the previous month, which was a result of 2,351 unemployed residents seeking employment and a 14,045 decrease in residents employed. Indiana's total labor force stands at 3.33 million, and the state’s 64.2 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 62.7 percent.

Miami County, IN - A Peru couple was arrested on multiple drug charges early Wednesday morning in New Waverly after leading police on a high-speed chase with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
According to Peru Police Chief Michael Meeks, the pursuit started at approximately 2:18 a.m. Wednesday morning when Officer Westfall observed a vehicle leaving the Kroger parking lot with no headlights on. The vehicle traveled south on Business 31 and rapidly accelerated to 60 miles per hour. When Officer Westfall engaged his emergency lights the vehicle continued to accelerate, pulling away from the Police vehicle at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour.
