WASHINGTON – The message from the Department of Veterans Affairs to the friends and families of Veterans during Suicide Prevention Month is simple: Be There.

“We know that in 2014, an average of 20 Veterans a day died in this country from suicide, which is 20 too many,” said VA Secretary David J. Shulkin. “This is a national public health crisis requiring a national public health approach. When it comes to preventing Veteran suicide, VA can’t – and should not – do this alone.”

MIAMI COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces that a small structure replacement is scheduled for S.R. 19 in Miami County. S.R. 19 is expected to close on or after Monday, Sept. 11, weather permitting.


MIAMI COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces temporary lane restrictions planned for U.S. 24 in Miami County beginning Wednesday, Aug. 30, weather permitting.

MIAMI COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces that U.S. 31 is scheduled to be reduced to one lane in each direction while maintenance crews install a new pipe between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, weather permitting.

INDIANAPOLIS  – Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.1 percent for July and remains lower than the national rate of 4.3 percent. The unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the labor force. Indiana’s labor force decreased by 1,077 over the previous month due to a 4,008 decrease in employment and a 2,931 increase in unemployment. Indiana's total labor force continues to stand at more than 3.33 million, and the state’s 64.3 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 62.9 percent.

The Miami County Community Foundation (MCCF) has awarded $30,564 in grants so far in 2017. Grant applications will continue to be accepted and dollars will be awarded throughout the year.

The MCCF is excited that organizations have already been able to apply for and receive needed grant dollars. MCCF Director of Development Connie Cutler said, “It’s exciting to begin awarding grants, and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact these dollars will have on the community throughout the year.”

Tuesday night at the Peru Board of Works meeting, a resident of South Peru requested the Board of Works look a lowering the Speed limit on South Broadway Avenue / State Road 19 near the new Dollar General store on the south side of Peru.

The resident stated the speed limit was 45 mph and many motorists would drive in excess of that speed. He also reported several potential accidents that were near misses from drivers coming onto S. Broadway Avenue from the side streets and parking lots.

Peru WorkOne, the United Way of Miami County, and the Miami County System of Care Governance Coalition (SOCGC) are collaborating to improve the employment program known as Miami County Works.

The program will begin with a two hour educational course taught in the Peru WorkOne computer lab.
