Miami County, IN – A candidate for Miami County Clerk has withdrawn her candidacy for the November general election after it was learned that she had previous felony convictions that barred her from running for or holding the office of Clerk of Courts.

During a special meeting of the Miami County Election Board, Board chairman Richard Lancaster announced that April C. Montgomery withdrew her candidacy for the fall election yesterday after the Miami County Election Board had scheduled a meeting to discuss her disqualification. You can view the form Montgomery signed to remove herself from the ballot by clicking HERE.

The Board had been made aware that Ms. Montgomery had prior felony convictions which made her ineligible for the November ballot. Early voting for the election began on October 10, 2018.

According to the Election Board Secretary and current County Clerk, Tawna Leffel-Sands, Mongomery is a “disqualified candidate”.

Miami County, IN – The Miami County Election Board will hold an emergency meeting today at the Miami County Courthouse to discuss the possible disqualification of a candidate who is currently on the fall ballot.

According to the Miami County Clerk of Courts and Election Board Member Tawna-Leffel-Sands, the meeting will take place at 3:00 p.m. today in the Assembly Room at the Courthouse. The meeting is open to the public.

The meeting was scheduled when the election board received a complaint that the candidate in question was not eligible to be on the ballot due to a disqualifying circumstance. Leffel-Sands would not comment further on the name of the candidate involved on the reason for the possible disqualification.

While the board is holding a meeting to discuss the situation, they are not empowered to remove a candidate from the actual ballot after a July deadline. That would have to be done by the candidate withdrawing his/her candidacy or by a lawsuit that could be filed and then a judge could order the removal of the candidate from the ballot.
