Miami County, IN – In a ceremony today, Miami County Sheriff Tim Hunter presented Deputy Larry E. Catten with the Meritorious Life Saving Award for actions above and beyond the call of duty.
On October 21, 2019, while on duty, Deputy Cattin responded to a report of a tree in the roadway in the area of 3660 West CR 1350 North in Miami County. Upon his arrival, Deputy Cattin found a male unresponsive and not breathing. The victim, Michael Birner, of Macy, IN was attempting to clear the tree from the roadway when he came into contact with live power lines entangled in the branches. The resulting electrical shock caused serious burns and cardiac arrest. As several bystanders took action to call 911 and begin CPR, Deputy Cattin sprang into action immediately employing his AED and using his training to restore a pulse, stabilizing Mr. Birner until additional medical personnel airlifted him to a Fort Wayne Trauma center. Mr. Birner has since been able to return home and is recovering from his injuries.
In today’s presentation, Sheriff Hunter stated, “Deputy Cattin is to be commended and honored today for his lifesaving actions in the line of duty and for his professional conduct in the finest traditions of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.”
Deputy Cattin is a 25-year member of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. He also serves as Assistant Chief of the Macy Volunteer Fire Department and is a certified EMT.
