Peru, IN -Penny Hinkle, 53 of Kempton, IN is facing a charge of Theft, a Class A Misdemeanor following her arrest on August 23, 2019, for shoplifting three items form the 58 East Boutique in Peru.
According to a Peru Police Department probable cause affidavit, PPD Officer Andrew Doran was dispatched to the 58 East Boutique on July 27, 2019, at approximately 2:02 p.m. Doren was advised by the owner of the Boutique that two women came into the shop on Saturday, July 27th at approximately 1:57 p.m. One of the women in a blue shirt was seen grabbing three items separately and placing them in her purse. The items were all “Willow Tree” brand items and included a box worth $19.99, a statue holding a Lilly for $19.99 and a family statue with a mother, father, and child worth $25.00. The women then left the store without paying for anything. The total value of the three items taken was approximately $64.98.
On August 13, 2019, Officer Doran retrieved the store video and had it as well as still pictures of the lady in the blue shirt placed on the Peru Police Department’s Facebook page for the public’s assistance in identifying the female subject. You can view the video below:
From the social media postings, Officers learned the suspect in the photos and video was possibly Penny Hinkle, 53 of Kempton, IN. Captain Feller of the Peru Police Department was able to contact Ms. Hinkle via telephone and asked her to come to the Peru Police Department for a statement.
On August 23, 2019, at 3:00 p.m., Ms. Hinkle arrived at the Police station and made a recorded statement. According to Doran’s report, while signing the advice of rights form, Hinkle made the statement that “she did it”. The report goes on to state that “When she was shown the still photos from the video surveillance, she pointed herself out and said that was her”.
When asked what items she took, she stated she knew they were collectible Willow Tree items however she doesn’t know what she did with them.
Ms. Hinkle stated she had just gone through a bad break up and her daughter-in-law was in town. With her daughter-in-law was a friend who offered her a Xanax to help with her feeling down. Once she took the Xanax, Ms. Hinkle advised: “everything was cloudy”. She stated she does not remember going to Peru, but did say that it was her in the video.
She also stated that she does not know who the other woman was who was in the store with her other than she was a friend of her daughter-in-law.
Based on this information, a warrant was requested for the arrest of Penny K. Hinkle for Theft, a class A. Misdemeanor.
On Thursday, September 5, 2019, Penny Hinkle, 53 of Kempton, IN was taken into custody by the Miami County Sheriff’s Department on a charge of Theft.
All criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
