Arrest photo of Abbee Matthews, 30 of Peru

Peru, IN – Abbee S. Matthews, 30 of Peru is facing a charge of Possession of Methamphetamine after a traffic stop conducted on April 23, 2019, at approximately 7:11 p.m.

Peru Police Officer Brok Westfall conducted the traffic stop when he observed white jeep fail to signal until it was at the stop sign at 7th and Grant. The vehicle also failed to come to a complete stop. Officer Westfall activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. The Jeep failed to stop and continued to roll slowly after turning from Grant Street onto West 5th Street. The vehicle finally came to a stop in the parking lot of the Eagle’s Lodge near the alley.

Officer Westfall identified the driver as thirty-year-old Abbee Matthews of Peru. Ms. Matthews was advised of the reason for the stop. She provided officer Westfall with her license but did not have the vehicle registration.

Officer Westfall’s probable cause affidavit states that “While Abbee was speaking, she kept stuttering and was trembling. Abbee was having a hard time sitting still and formulating sentences.”

Officer Tussey arrived on scene to assist and was asked to watch Ms. Matthews and her male passenger while Officer Westfall conducted a license and warrant check.

While issuing Ms. Matthews a ticket, PPD Sergeant Raber arrived with her K9 Partner Fargo to conduct a “free air sniff” around the suspect vehicle. Fargo’s behavior indicated the presence of illegal drugs inside the suspect vehicle.

Officer Tussey searched the male passenger with nothing being located.

Sergeant Raber then searched Ms. Matthews. A red in color plastic cylinder was located. Inside this cylinder was a clear plastic bag that held a white crystal-like substance. That substance would field test positive for methamphetamine and weighed approximately two grams.

After being read her Miranda rights, Ms. Matthews advised that the male passenger tossed her the items after Officer Westfall activated his emergency lights to conduct the traffic stop.

The male passenger was released from the scene.

Abbee Matthews, 30 of Peru, was transported to the Miami County Jail on a charge of Possession of Methamphetamine. She was also issued citations for disregarding a stop sign and failure to signal within 200 feet.

All criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
