Peru, IN – Two Peru men were arrested on charges of Possession of Marijuana during a routine traffic stop on Friday, March 8, 2019, at approximately 6:01 p.m.
Officer Shawn Swinford conducted the traffic stop on the silver passenger vehicle after it failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection of Huntington and Main Streets.
The driver was identified as Matthew Schoolman, 32, of Peru. Twenty-nine-year-old Shawn Mason was identified as the front seat passenger. There was also a female subject in the vehicle whose name was not included in the probable cause affidavit.
After being advised of the reason for the stop, Officer Swinford observed Mr. Schoolman’s hands to be shaking. He also detected the odor of raw marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
Officer Swinford radioed other city units for assistance. Upon the arrival of Officer Shoffner, the vehicle occupants were informed that Officer Swinford detected the odor of marijuana. Each was asked to get out of the car and was searched. No evidence was found during these searched. Lt. Ulery also assisted with the traffic stop.
A search of the silver passenger vehicle would result in the location of a plastic bag with a green leafy plant like material in the center console which field tested positive for marijuana and weighed approximately 3.1 grams.
Both men were read their rights and questioned about the marijuana located in the vehicle. Mr. Schoolman requested an attorney before answering any questions. Mr. Mason denied the “weed” was his and would not say who it belonged to.
Due to the marijuana being within arms reach of both men, both were advised that they were being placed under arrest for Possession of Marijuana.
Matthew Schoolman, 32, of Peru, and Shawn Mason, 29, of Peru face a charge of Possession of Marijuana. They were transported to the Miami County Jail and left in the custody of the jail staff.
All criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
