Miami County, IN - Christopher Bishop, 25 of Macy, IN faces charges of Operating While Intoxicated-Refusal and Leaving The Scene Of An Accident following an accident that took place on Monday, January 21, 2019, at approximately 9:35 p.m.
According to an ISP Report of Arrest, filed with the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office, Trooper Andrew Smith arrived at the Northwest corner of County Road 1000 N. and Jackson Street in Deedsville to investigate an accident where the driver possibly left the scene on foot.
Upon arrival at the location, Trooper Smith located a red 1996 Chevrolet truck. Inside and outside the truck were several open containers of alcohol. Mr. Bishop’s birth certificate was also located in the glove compartment.
A Miami County Deputy contacted Trooper Smith and advised him that he was familiar with the vehicle and knew Mr. Bishop drove it on a regular basis.
Trooper Doug Weaver arrived to assist and along with Trooper Smith were able to locate tracks in the snow that headed southbound from the crash scene. The officers followed these tracks for almost an hour until they ended at the front porch of a property.
The owner of the residence was contacted and verbally consented to a search of the residence for Mr. Bishop. He was located in the basement and taken into custody.
Upon speaking with Mr. Bishop, Officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. The report also indicated that his speech was slowed and slurred and his balance was unsteady. The officers also noted that Bishop’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot.
At first, Mr. Bishop denied being in the crash. Then when asked how much he had to drink before the crash, he stated “a few beers.”
Bishop refused to do any field sobriety tests or participate in any chemical testing even after being read Indiana Implied Consent.
He was also read his rights and again denied crashing the vehicle. Due to his physical appearance, Officers believe that Mr. Bishop had been outside for an extended period of time and the tracks officers followed from the crash scene lead directly to the residence where Bishop was located.
