Miami County, IN - Patrick Walker, 32, of Kokomo, IN was arrested by Miami County Sheriff’s Department on charges of Operating While Intoxicated and Driving While Suspended following the investigation of a one-vehicle accident in the area of County Road 1350 S. Near County Road 200 W., Kokomo on January 19, 2019.

According to a Miami County Sheriff’s Department probable cause affidavit, Miami County Deputies and Indiana State Police responded to a one-vehicle accident involving personal injury at approximately 8:49 p.m. Miami County Community Corrections Officer Greg Hewitt informed dispatch that he located a truck on County Road 1350 South that had struck a tree. Hewitt stated he believed the driver was located inside a residence in the area.

Miami County Deputy Nathan Freeman and ISP Trooper Moon arrived at approximately 9:00 p.m. and knocked on the door of the residence. A male identified as Patrick Walker, 32 of Kokomo answered the door. Mr. Walker had a bloody nose and abrasions on his forehead. When asked if he was the driver of the truck down the road involved in the accident, Mr. Walker stated he was.

Mr. Walker was asked to exit the residences and be examined by first responders. He walked from the residence to the ambulance.

While checking his welfare, Sergeant Jenkins of the Miami County Sheriff’s Department was checking with area residents looking for witnesses to the accident. It was determined that the vehicle involved in the accident was registered to Patrick Walker.

Deputy Freeman entered the ambulance to speak with Mr. Walker and at that time observed the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. When asked how much he had to drink, Mr. Walker stated he had “one shot”.

Walker agreed to submit to a portable breath test with a result of .191% recorded. Walker was checked by first responders from the Galveston Fire Department before he signed a medical refusal.

Walker was then informed that he was being detained until the completion of an OWI Investigation. At this time, Deputy Freeman learned from Miami County Central Dispatch that Mr. Walker’s driving privileges were suspended and he was then placed in handcuffs and read his rights.

Walker stated he was alone at the time of the crash and that “something” moved in front of him and he swerved to miss the object. He later stated another vehicle had run him off the road.

Walker stated that he had been drinking “Blackberry 99” liquor.

Mr. Walker was then transported to the Miami County Sheriff’s Department to conduct field sobriety tests and was given a certified breath test. The first sample tested at .170 g/210 L. A third attempt provided a sample of .173 g/210 L.

Patrick Walker, 32, of Kokomo, IN was then arrested on charges of Operating While Intoxicated and Driving While Suspended.

All criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
