Peru, IN – Milan Washington, 29 of Lafayette is facing a charge of Theft (A Misd.) for failure to pay a $150.00 cab fare for a trip from Lafayette to Peru on Saturday, October 30, 2018.
According to a Peru Police Department probable cause affidavit, PPD Officer Jeremy Brindle was dispatched to the 10 block of N. Water Street in reference to a cab driver from Lafayette, IN who had a man fail to pay for a cab fare. Officer Brindle located the cab driver and learned that he was the owner/operator of a cab service who had transported a man from Lafayette to Peru. The suspect was described as a short black male in his late 20’s or early 30 wearing all black clothing and carrying a black backpack. The cab fare was reported to be $150.00.
Upon dropping the subject off in the area, the man got out of the cab and began walking away eastbound down an alley. The cab driver attempted to follow the subject but lost sight of him. The cab driver stated he went back to the location where he dropped the man off and then contacted the police.
Officer Brindle put out a description of the subject over the police radio, while officers checked the area for the subject. A male matching the description of the subject was then located in the parking lot of the McClure’s Station on E. Main St. Officer Brindle arrived at that location and spoke with the subject identified as Milan Washington, 29 of Lafayette.
Mr. Washington advised that he was from out of town waiting on a friend. He was then read his Miranda Rights and was asked why he didn’t pay for his cab ride from Lafayette to Peru. Milan advised that he was talking to his friend on the phone and that this friend was supposed to pay for his cab fare.
When the cab stopped, Washington grabbed his belongings and began looking for his friend. He further stated that he was homeless and did not have any money to pay the fare.
Mr. Washington was then placed into handcuffs and advised he was under arrest for theft. He was transported to the Miami County Jail and booked without further incident.
