Please take a few minutes and ask your students to write a short essay:
59% of families residing in Peru struggle to make ends meet daily.
ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households are a vital part of our community and this population is growing. ALICE adults hold jobs that are critical to the success of our community—like child care workers, teachers, home health aides, truck drivers, store clerks, and receptionists. They work hard to care for their families but struggle to pay everyday bills. These people may work minimum wage jobs full time but are unable to save any money. Consider how everyday expenses may be handled by ALICE households, then consider unexpected expenses.
A. Describe the challenges you foresee ALICE families facing and how these challenges hurt the community as a whole. (What happens when an unexpected car repair or a child is ill and cannot attend daycare occurs?-describe other potential problems)
B. How can our community better support ALICE families? (Design a plan to implement changes identified.)
You might want to discuss the question first and offer some ideas on how they could answer it. Our website might offer some insight at www.uwmiamip.org.
The deadline for all entries will be Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. at the United Way office. All entries have to be printed off, no electronic submissions. Please have someone drop off the entries at the United Way office located at 13 E. Main Street Peru, IN.
Please make sure the student lists their first and last name as well as a contact number along with the school’s name on each of the student’s pages in order to avoid confusion.
The student may use the form provided or plain paper. You can download the form by clicking HERE. The essay must be typed and include a minimum of 250 and a maximum of 500-word count. All entries are the property of the United Way and could be published. If you have any questions, feel free to call our office at 765-473-4240.
Thank you, and we hope the students enjoy this opportunity to improve their writing skills.
