No, I didn’t set my fingers on the wrong keys for the title of this week’s column. That’s the way you say “happy new year” in Gaelic. My heritage is mostly Irish and British, so I thought I’d give a nod to my past as we take a look to the future.
I have probably mentioned before that I don’t make resolutions. My very lame joke is that “resolution” is a Latin word for something you know you should do but have no intention of actually doing. For years I’ve set goals and revisited them three or four times throughout the year to see how I’m doing at reaching them. In case you’re wondering, I did a decent job of meeting my 2019 goals. I hope you did as well.
This year is a bit different. Several months ago, my life/health/business coach spoke to me about intentions. It was while we were getting ready for our son’s wedding. For many people the word “goals” carries a lot of pressure. Or, sometimes, for people like me, the resolve of “goals” can be lessened through years of setting and working toward them. On the other hand, the word “intentions” speaks of making intentional choices. It is about thinking clearly about what you choose to eat, what you choose to think about, and how you spend your time. No more mindlessly going through days and weeks at a time.
Every day we make choices, and each of choice starts us down a particular path. What will I eat for breakfast? That choice either gives me the energy I need for the day or leads to a “well, I’ve already blown it for today” attitude about my lunch and supper choices. What will I wear? I can present to the world the image of a professional woman; a casual, comfy woman; or a sloppy, careless woman. What will I read? I can choose a trashy novel, an uplifting novel or non-fiction book, or something that will give me new tools for the challenges in my life. None of these choices is terrible. Even that donut for breakfast can be a welcome indulgence. But every one of them should be made intentionally. I need to be aware of the consequences of every choice. On the other hand, this isn’t about agonizing over each and every decision either. It’s important to find harmony in life. There’s a time and place for working hard, for resting, and for playing. The key is deciding which you’re doing at this moment and embracing that choice.
This year I’m setting intentions in the main areas of my life. Here are a few of them:
• Be thriftier.
• Go on a monthly date w/The Furry Guy.
• Enjoy a monthly coffee/lunch/dinner date with a friend.
• Read my Bible/Devotional first thing in the morning before anything else.
• My word for 2020 is “princess.” I will embrace the role and responsibilities of my identity as the daughter of The King of Kings.
• Earn the monthly Pampered Chef incentive.
• Every week write a note to one of our Bickford residents.
• Make and share at least 1 video monthly on social media.
As you begin the new year, the new decade, I hope you are filled with a sense of hope and a set of good intentions. If you’d like to share your intentions/goals/resolutions with me, I’d be interested to know what you’re working on in the coming year.
